FAQ
Is Atarax the same as Vistaril? Both contain hydroxyzine, but Atarax is hydroxyzine hydrochloride (tablets/solution) and Vistaril is hydroxyzine pamoate (capsules). Your prescription will specify.
Is hydroxyzine habit-forming? No. It is not a controlled substance, but it can cause sedation and should be used as directed.
Can I drink alcohol? No—avoid alcohol due to additive drowsiness and risk of impaired coordination.
Can I take it as a sleep aid? Only as directed by your clinician; it can cause next-day drowsiness and interacts with other sedatives.

Hydroxyzine can be helpful for itch and short-term anxiety but often causes drowsiness. We’ll review your medication list for QT-prolonging drugs and other sedatives, discuss daytime vs bedtime dosing, and help you avoid anticholinergic side effects—especially if you have glaucoma or prostate symptoms.
