As a pharmacist, I reach for amoxicillin a lot because it strikes a really good balance of “strong enough for the job, gentle enough for most people.” It covers many of the common bacteria behind ear, sinus, and throat infections, it’s been studied for decades, and most patients tolerate it well—fewer stomach issues than some alternatives, and there’s an easy-to-measure liquid option for kids. Dosing is straightforward, it’s widely available, and the cost is usually reasonable, which matters for adherence. It’s also a narrower choice than some heavy-duty antibiotics, so when it’s appropriate it helps us avoid overusing broad-spectrum drugs that drive resistance. That said, it still requires a clinician’s judgment if there’s a penicillin allergy, a different bug is suspected, or it’s likely viral, we’ll steer another way.
