What is Mebendazole?
Mebendazole (brand name Vermox) is a prescription anthelmintic (deworming) medicine used to treat certain intestinal worm infections. It works by preventing worms from absorbing sugar (glucose), which helps clear the infection. Dispensed by Serv u Pharmacy only with a valid prescription.
Uses
- Pinworm infection
- Roundworm infection
- Whipworm infection
- Hookworm infection
- Mixed helminth infections (per prescriber’s regimen)
Only your clinician can determine if mebendazole is appropriate for you and which regimen is needed.
How it’s taken (follow your prescription)
Take exactly as prescribed. Dosing depends on the type of worm being treated. Some infections are treated with a single dose; others require a multi-day course, and sometimes a repeat dose is recommended to prevent reinfection.
| Form | Strengths (examples) |
|---|---|
| Chewable tablets | 100 mg (common) |
| Tablets | 100 mg; 500 mg (varies by product/market) |
Refer to your label for exact dosing. Pharmacist counseling is available at checkout.

With mebendazole, the “pharmacy win” is preventing the bounce-back. For pinworms especially, I see patients take the dose correctly but then the infection seems to return because the household routine didn’t change. My practical advice: treat the medicine and the environment at the same time. On day one, wash bedding and pajamas, keep nails short, and reinforce handwashing especially after the bathroom and before eating. If your prescriber recommends a repeat dose (common for pinworms), put it on your calendar immediately; missing that second dose is one of the most frequent reasons people end up needing treatment again. And if multiple family members have symptoms, don’t “share” tablets ask the prescriber for appropriate evaluation and dosing for each person.
