What is Albuterol?

Albuterol (brands: Ventolin/ProAir/Proventil) is a short-acting β2-agonist used to treat and prevent bronchospasm in asthma and other reversible obstructive airway diseases. Available as HFA inhaler and nebulizer solution. Dispensed by Serv-U Pharmacy only with a valid prescription.

Uses
  • Relief of acute bronchospasm
  • Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB)
  • Adjunct in COPD with reversible component (per prescriber)

Only your clinician can determine if albuterol is appropriate for you.

How it’s taken (follow your prescription)

MDI: 1–2 inhalations as needed; use spacer if instructed. Wait ~1 minute between puffs. Neb: 2.5 mg via nebulizer as directed. If you miss a dose for EIB prevention, take per plan; do not exceed labeled frequency.

Form Strengths (examples)
HFA inhaler (MDI) 90 mcg/actuation
Nebulizer solution 2.5 mg/3 mL (0.083%)

Prime and clean inhaler per label. Track remaining doses with the counter. Pharmacist counseling is available at checkout.

Warnings & interactions
  • Paradoxical bronchospasm: Stop and seek care if breathing worsens immediately after dosing.
  • Cardiovascular effects: Use caution with heart disease; report palpitations or chest pain.
  • Drug interactions: Non-selective β-blockers may reduce effect; MAOIs/TCA use within 2 weeks may potentiate CV effects—discuss with your clinician.
  • Diabetes/Hypokalemia: Monitor if at risk; high doses may lower potassium.
  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Discuss risks/benefits with your clinician.
Storage

Store inhalers at room temperature; avoid heat/freezing. Keep canister dry with cap on. Store neb vials in foil pouch until use.

FAQ

How long does a puff last? Relief typically begins within minutes and lasts 4–6 hours.

Can I overuse it? Yes—frequent use may signal poor control. See your prescriber to adjust maintenance therapy.

Do you accept my insurance? We accept most major plans. Enter your details at checkout to see your copay.
