Augmentin is a go-to when we suspect β-lactamase–producing bacteria or when amoxicillin alone isn’t likely enough. It keeps the familiar amoxicillin backbone but adds clavulanate to restore activity against certain resistant organisms. I remind patients to take it with food to reduce GI upset and to finish the course as prescribed. Compared to amoxicillin alone, there’s a slightly higher chance of stomach issues or diarrhea, and we’re cautious if there’s any liver history or prior Augmentin-related jaundice. As always, if it’s probably viral or there’s a penicillin allergy, we’ll choose another path.
